composting worms

We have worms! We are now growing and selling red wiggler worms for at-home composters. They are healthy, squirmy guys that eat lots and leave behind wonderful nurtrients for your plants. They are good for anyone who has kitchen scraps or lawn/garden waste.
Simply place the worms in a well drained container with a little moist soil and begin to add your scraps. As long as you keep them fed, the worms will continue to turn your waste materials into new soil called "worm castings." The mix needs to be kept a little damp and protected from hard freeze and extreme heat. Include potato, banana and orange peelings; salad or slaw leaf scraps; moldy refrigerator gleanings; apple cores; coffee grounds; yard and garden trimmings, shredded paper and more. Just don't get the mix too dry or too sloppy.
I prefer to keep a lid on my containers to keep out unwanted water, racoons, birds, etc. I have placed them under a shade tree handy to the kitchen door. (My granddad used to keep his in a box in his basement covered with a sheet of moss and a piece of holey plywood. Some of my customers prefer to keep theirs in their kitchens. That would make this possible even for apartment dwellers!) I don't add anything our dogs might be interested in. Try them . You'll like them. They make a great gift, too!
