Statistics: We had 9 million refugees before the Sudanese crisis, and a new enumeration will be made in 2024

Major General Khairat Barakat, head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, revealed that the official figures on the number of refugees in Egypt indicate that there are about 9 million people on Egyptian soil, including 4 million Sudanese citizens, followed by 1.5 million Syrian citizens, according to the latest monitoring before the recent Sudanese crisis, which is what Equivalent to a population of 3 to 4 European countries.

The head of statistics added, in exclusive statements on the sidelines of the conference launching the diagnostic study on the mechanisms of collecting labor migration data in Egypt, that it is likely that the number may increase by about two million additional refugees after the Sudanese crisis, stressing that the increasing number of refugees puts pressure on the Egyptian economy in terms of The volume of demand for goods and services, in addition to its effects on the Egyptian labor market.

International Migration Survey

He continued: “The international migration survey is scheduled to be conducted in coordination with the International Organization for Migration, UNHCR, ministries, concerned authorities and all organizations to enumerate the number of refugees and their characteristics by the end of this year, as the protocol will be signed next October, then preparatory work will begin for a period of 5 months, after which field work will begin.” during the first quarter of 2024.

Graziella Rizza, Head of the Migration, Security, Governance, Gender and Civil Society Sector, was a deputy representative of the European Union Commission Ambassador to Egypt. In light of the displacement of large numbers of people to the south as a result of the military confrontations taking place on Sudanese soil, it is likely that these numbers will increase.

It included the presentation of the guidelines issued by the 20th International Conference of Labor Statistics Experts related to global labor migration statistics, with a focus on the availability of the Arabic version of the guidelines, and the presentation of the diagnostic study and its main results.
