Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, met with Saba Korosi, President of the United Nations General Assembly, On the sidelines of his participation in the “World Water Week” in Stockholm.
During the meeting, international efforts were discussed in the field of adapting to climate change and its negative effects on the water sector worldwide. Dr. Swailem indicated Egypt’s constant interest in water and climate issues, which are among the most important priorities of the Egyptian state, and Egypt’s keenness to cooperate with the United Nations and all countries and organizations. Regional and international, to work to increase the interest of the international community in the file of water and climate.
The importance of building on what was achieved during the COP27 conference and continuing to put the water file at the top of the global climate agenda
During the meeting, the ongoing procedures for holding the next climate conference, COP28, were reviewed, where Dr. Swailem indicated the importance of building on what was achieved during the COP27 conference and continuing to put the water file at the top of the global climate agenda, as Egypt is currently working (in coordination with Japan and the United Kingdom) to submit a report To the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to continue building on the achievements of the water file, which were achieved during the COP27 conference.
The results of the United Nations Water Conference, which was held in March 2023, and the subsequent measures to activate these results were discussed, especially the “interactive dialogue on water and climate”, which was organized by Egypt and Japan during the conference, where Dr. Swailem indicated that a high-level session will be held on Sidelines of the Sixth Cairo Water Week, to discuss moving forward in this interactive dialogue.
They also discussed preparations for the upcoming summit of the United Nations General Assembly on sustainable development goals, which is scheduled to be held in September 2023, and the expected discussions during the summit on the water file, and achieving the goals of sustainable development, especially the sixth goal of which is concerned with water.
