Stefan Broccoli struck late on to send Cambridge City into the next round of the Isuzu FA Trophy on Saturday courtesy of a 2-1 victory on the road at Kings Langley.
The home side went into the game unbeaten in the league so far this season and it was they that broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Jermaine Rene Howe, who got the better of City goalkeeper Joe Welch from close range.
Prior to falling behind the Lilywhites had twice come close to scoring with two Taylor Parr efforts that struck the crossbar, but they finally got the goal their first-half performance deserved when Joe Hood curled the ball into the bottom corner in the 30th minute.
While the possession was fairly even during the second half it was City that created the better of the chances. Dan Cotton fired an effort straight at Alex Tokarczyk in the Langley goal, while Broccoli’s celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
However, with six minutes remaining Broccoli was not to be denied his moment. Substitute Stan Leech flicked the ball on for the attacking midfielder, who perfectly timed his run before showing good composure with the finish.
And any hopes Langley had of finding a late equalising goal were dented when their goalkeeper Tokarczyk was handed his marching orders for two bookable offences – both dissent – within the space of 60 seconds.
City’s reward for their victory is a second round qualifying tie at home against Leighton Town – the side they recently thumped 6-1 in the Emirates FA Cup. The game is likely to be played on Sunday, September 24 owing to the fact that City’s tenants St Ives Town are due to be at home on Saturday, September 23.
Next up for Robbie Nightingale’s side is a trip to Biggleswade in the FA Cup on Saturday, September 16.
